WHAT HOME OFFICE REMODELING INCLUDES

From Spare Room to Real Office

Home office remodeling is the conversion or update of a room so it supports daily work: dedicated power and data, task lighting, built-in desks and shelving, sound control and a finish that makes the space feel separate from the rest of the home.

The starting point can be a spare bedroom, a den, a nook under a staircase or part of a garage. The sections below show what each choice involves. For a larger change, such as turning a whole garage into a workspace, see our garage conversions service.

DESIGN FOR WORK

Four Things a Good Home Office Gets Right

These decisions make the difference between a room you work in and a room you work around.

  1. 1.Power and dataOutlets at desk height and at the floor, USB-C charging, and an Ethernet line for video calls. Easiest to add while the wall is open.
  2. 2.Light without glarePlace the desk so a window is beside the screen, not behind or in front of it, and add a dimmable task light for evenings.
  3. 3.Storage within reachA wall of shelves and a deep drawer system keep paper and equipment off the desk and out of video calls.
  4. 4.Sound and privacyA solid-core door, door seals and insulation in a shared wall make calls easier for you and the rest of the home.

WHERE THE OFFICE GOES

Choosing the Right Space

Each location has its own advantages and its own work.

  • Lightest work

    Spare Room or Den

The easiest option: a door and walls already exist.

    • New outlets, lighting and flooring
    • Built-in desk and shelves
    • Soundproofing the shared walls
  • Medium work

    Nook or Open Area

Good for light use in a busy home.

    • A built-in desk along a wall
    • Cabinets that close at the end of the day
    • Outlets and lighting added into the wall
  • Most work

    Garage Conversion

Most space and privacy, with the most work.

    • Insulation, flooring and climate control
    • Electrical and lighting to code
    • Permits and structural planning

How much does it cost to build a home office in Southern California?

The range is wide. A spare-room update with outlets, lighting and paint costs far less than a garage conversion with insulation, new electrical and permits. We give a written estimate after a free visit.

Can you convert my garage into an office?

Yes. A garage conversion needs insulation, flooring, electrical, ventilation and usually permits. We plan the work with you and explain which requirements apply before we start.

Can you add outlets and a network connection to a finished room?

Often yes. We can add outlets, USB charging and data lines through the existing walls and patch the drywall, though it is simpler when the wall is open for other work.

What flooring works best in a home office?

Luxury vinyl plank and engineered hardwood are common because they are quiet, durable under a rolling chair and easy to clean. We check the subfloor and the transitions to nearby rooms.

Do you build home offices in Riverside, Corona and Orange County?

Yes. ARD Remodeling serves homeowners in Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties and other cities listed on our Service Areas page. Request an estimate and we confirm your address.
